Camping Policy for the Mobile Area Council Cub Scouts

Many parents of new Cub Scouts and new Den Leaders want to experience Scoutings' outdoor adventure, but may not be aware of BSA's efforts to provide a healthy and safe program. Therefore, this policy has been developed to address "what is" and "what is not" permitted in the Mobile Area Council. In addition to the program specific policy below all outings must:

  1. Follow the Guide to Safe Scouting and
  2. Have an approved tour permit. This policy does not apply to both Family Camping at Summer Camp and Webelos Adventure Camp.

Cub Scout Pack Camping
(Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos and Family Members):

Permitted to camp for one night as part of an approved Cub Scout Pack campout. Each Cub Scout must have an adult partner over the age of 21 that is camping with him.The PACK must have at least one adult who is BSA B.A.L.O.O. trained (Basis Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation). In addition, the PACK must have at least one adult who holds a current valid first aid certificate. (Guide to Safe Scouting #34416D 2003)

Webelos Den Camping:

Permitted to camp for two nights as part of a council approved Webelos DEN campout. Each Webelos Scout must have an adult partner over the age of 21 that is camping with him. The DEN must have at least one adult who is BSA O.W.L. trained (Outdoor Webelos Leader Training). In addition, the DEN must have at least one adult who holds a current valid first aid certificate. (Guide to Safe Scouting #34416D 2003) Siblings are not permitted at Webelos Campouts.

Family Camping reflects the Mobile Area Council's commitment to offer a progressive Scouting program with age-appropriate camping activities. The goal of the pack camping activity is to provide a successful Pack camping outing that is:

  1. Fun
  2. Based on the purposes of Cub Scouting.
  3. Successful in whetting the appetite of the Cub Scouts, his parents, and the leaders to want more of the outdoors.
  • Family camp-outs may include one family or a group of families from the same unit.
  • Family camp-outs may be conducted twice per year, in addition to participation in Council activities.
  • Family camp-outs are to involve fun-filled, no-pressure, non-competitive activities which include participation by family members and siblings. Cub Scout activities should not include advancement for advancement's sake.
  • At least one adult from the Pack must have completed BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) and Youth Protection Training. The person holding BALOO and YPT certification must be present at the family campout the entire time.
  • Family camp-outs conducted as part of a Scouting program must be held at a facility inspected and approved by the council camping committee.
