Geographic Names Information System

The U.S. Geological Survey, located in Reston, Virginia, is a bureau of the U.S. Department of Interior.  The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States.  The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information. Information about foreign geographic feature names can be obtained from the GEOnet Names Server, developed and maintained by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency.  Use your browser's "Back Button" to return to this page.

The feature class terms and abbreviations used in the GNIS currently consist of nine or fewer letters and were chosen for computer search and retrieval purposes. They do not necessarily represent terminology for the identification of all kinds of cultural and natural features.  Although some of the terms may agree with dictionary definitions, they represent more generalized categories.  Use your browser's  "Find Function" (CNTL-F) to locate terms that you are looking for or click HERE for a complete list of the Feature Class Types which refers you to the "proper" category.  Use your browser's "Back Button" to return to this page.

Below are the terms, definitions, synonyms and links to the results for each feature's existence in each of the listed counties.  Remember, some of the features do not exist in a particular county.  Your browser must be able to display tables to get the most out of these links.  If your browser does NOT support or display tables, click HERE.

Use your browser's "Back Button" to return to this page after each search.
