MUMBLINGS February 24, 2005
"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world," someone
has said. It has also been said that women control 51% of the vote, 80% of the
wealth and have enhancements that attract men.
Of course women have always played an important part in
political affairs, even before the 19th Amendment of the American Constitution
allowing them the privilege of voting.
The above was mentioned because of the
possibilities of two ladies making a big splash in state and city politics
within the next several months.
These two are selected due to the fact
that both have made races state wide and are well known.
They are Lucy Baxley, present Lt. Governor
of Alabama and former State Treasurer. She has made three statewide races and
is preparing to make the fourth, perhaps the most important of all. She's going
to seek to be Alabama's second elected lady governor. Lurleen Wallace was the
first.
The other lady, Ann Bedsole of Mobile has
run for governor. Making a strong race, she was not elected, but was defeated
by Fob James. She was an effective state senator representing Mobile County
and, like Lucy, is an attractive, intelligent person. She is considering a race
for mayor of Mobile.
There may be other ladies in these two
races but I mention these two because of their statewide prominence and other
attributes.
You already see "I love Lucy" signs out
over the state. Although she has not made a firm commitment to run for
governor, it is very plain that she fully intends to do so. She will run on the
Democratic ticket, as she has been a life long member of this party.
No one can say at this time whether Mrs.
Baxley will be victorious but it can be safely said that she will make a big
splash and if anyone beats her, they will most likely be governor. Both Lucy
and Ann have children and have thus "rocked the cradle."
Each is above 50 years of age. Lucy admits
to being 67, Ann is, so far, quiet on the subject.
Of course Ann will have strong opposition,
but as mentioned about Lucy, the person who beats her will probably be mayor of
Mobile for the next four years.
