MUMBLINGS June 2, 2005

For the past 68 years, thousands of people have visited my offices on 102 west 2nd street, one half block from the court house or around the corner from The Baldwin Times building.

Among them have been prominent people but mostly, average folk like me who are kind enough to visit. Many come by to get my opinions but I have noticed over the years that most of them give me theirs. All this is fine. Interestingly, some drop by without an appointment. I am able to see them and hopefully visitors will continue to drop by. Recently, two VIP friends dropped in and gave me interesting information, which was appreciated. I always like to see people come, particularly friends.

The first was Ron Creel. Most of you probably do not remember Ron but he was a member of the State Board of Education for one term (1979-83). It was during this time that he was instrumental in helping select Dr. Gary Branch to become president of Baldwin's community college. We should all be thankful because he has made a great record in developing the school. It was during this period, that Ron met the lovely Shirley McKissack and later married her. Everybody loves Shirley and she was well known because she had been secretary to several of our county's superintendents of education. She is the daughter of Vesta Crapara, Pine Grove community and the mother of Dr. Randy McKissack, a prominent surgeon in Fairhope and Bay Minette. The other son is Steven, who has a successful landscape and lawn business in Birmingham.

Ron is President and CEO of Alabama Sports Festival at the headquarters in Montgomery where he has lived all his life, and since he married Shirley that is their home. He has worked with the youth of Alabama where he holds a sports tournament in Mobile every year with 7,000 or more in attendance. Shirley has been seriously ill but is now better, according to her mother and Ron.

Ron often stops in to say howdy but this time he had a special message to give me. He said, "In my opinion, Judge Moore will definitely be a candidate for governor". He should know because he is one of Judge Moore's right hand men and is working hard for his interests. Naturally, he thinks the Judge will be our next governor and will easily defeat our present incumbent governor, Governor Riley.

Ron also wanted to tell and invite me to Judge Moore's upcoming Baldwin rally, "For the love of God and Country Rally" featuring Judge Roy Moore, which will take place Friday, June the 3rd at Oak Hollow Farm, 14210 Greeno Road, Fairhope.

Of course everybody is invited to attend, free fish fry, blue grass music, etc. Doubt if I'll be able to make the rally but you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a huge crowd there.

The other delightful visitor was John McMillan. John is well known in this county, being the twin brother of Steve McMillan who has been representing Baldwin in the legislature for the past 20 years. Their father was John Murphy McMillan of Stockton where their mother still lives and who recently celebrated her 94th birthday. John is married to the beautiful Katherine Turner, whose father was the county agent in Baldwin County for many years. Her sister Jane and brother Frank Jr. still live in Bay Minette. John served as a Baldwin County Commissioner for one term and one term in the state legislature but resigned to become the Executive Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association, headquartered in Montgomery. He has held this position for over 20 years but expects to retire in the next year.

Not surprisingly, John is considering running for some local or statewide office. Since being known state wide, he could make a formidable race for such an office as Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries. He would make a dandy. He might also have his eye on some legislative office such as state senator. If he chooses to run for the senate, living in Stockton, he would be in the same district as Pat Lindsey, which covers some seven counties. At this time it is not known whether Pat will run again, but it can safely be assumed that he will.

This district includes part of northwest and north Baldwin.

John has done an excellent job with the Forestry Commission and I hate to see him retire, but time passes on and things change.

See you again soon, I hope.
