Winning war in Iraq critical to survival of nation's economy

MUMBLINGS August 24, 2006

Being an optimist I hate to admit it, the world is in turmoil. Not that any new evidence is needed, but everyone should be convinced by now that the Muslims are out to kill all of us.

It has been five years since 9/11 where the terrorists destroyed two of the tallest buildings in New York City and damaged the Pentagon, killing hundreds of our people. I have not been able to understand why many people, seemingly a majority of Americans, criticize President Bush for having the intelligence and courage to intervene in the Middle East, trying to curtail the efforts of the killers over there instead of letting them come to our country.

There is so much news about all of this, it doesn’t behoove me in this small column to discuss the matter in length but I do have deep feelings on the subject. Other than the safety factor for our citizens, the Middle East is important to us in other ways. Many who are against Bush for anything he does, accuse him of starting the war in Iraq because of the oil there. This is probably not exact but it is certainly worthy of consideration. If our enemies ever got charge of the Middle East oil, they would probably not want us to have any of it and it is absolutely essential to our economy and us for us to have gasoline.

As of a matter of fact, 56 percent of the world oil production is in the Middle East. Only about four percent is in other countries and Uncle Sam produces about 40 percent of what we need. Unfortunately, prices seem to keep going up and there doesn’t seem to be an end to it.

There are ways of producing fuels other than from the oil fields. Hitler made alcohol out of coal during World War Two. It can still be done and as the oil situation gets more critical, other methods will be tried.

Dr. Jack Boykin of Daphne is a brilliant Chemist and is fully knowledgable of how other fuels can be made. It is interesting to talk to him to see how intelligent he is in this area.

As a matter of fact, China has signed a contract with him to get him to design and help erect a huge plant in that country to make a chemical from which pipe will be made. The housing industry in China is fantastic at this time and they cannot get enough material to keep up with the demand.

Boykin is fully aware of the situation throughout the world and says the secret to it in the long run is making the fuel out of coal. From coal you make methane then out of which you can make fuel oil.

He says there is enough coal in the United States to supply our needs for 500 years and in Canada there is enough to supply for 1000 years. Now with the price of gasoline as high as it is, it’s going to be economical to use other methods of producing it. I understand Exxon has the knowledge of how to do this and they are building a huge plant in Canada.

Dr. Boykin has the knowledge to make fuel oil out of old tires, grass, pine trees and numerous things… it’s just a simple chemical process, according to him. In fact, he is planning on erecting a plant to make the fuel oil out of tires or any of the other material available.

He said 10,000 acres of grass would produce enough fuel to supply 20 million gallons that would supply Baldwin County’s needs for one year. The same can be done with pine trees.

Fuel to keep our automobiles and industries running is an important subject and this writer, like everybody is interested, but I know very little about the solutions. The solutions are there and we will develop them. Americans have a lot of ingenuity and we will prevail some way.

See you again soon, I hope.
