Elberta May Wine

Elberta May Wine

Elberta, Alabama was founded by the Baldwin County Colonization, Company in 1905. Elberta was settled mostly by Germans who established businesses and farms to include vineyards and wineries. The Bartels Winery in Lillian and the Hagendorfer Winery in Elberta were best known. Bartels Winery later operated in Pensacola, FL, from 1937-78. Bartels became the mentor of Perdido Vineyards and Winery established in 1979.

In tribute to these hardy, industrious Germans who enriched the culture of Baldwin County, Perdido Vineyards' ELBERTA MAY WINE combines the European heritage of Woodruff flavor with native Alabama wine. Traditional May Wine is made with Rhine or Mosélle wine and woodruff when the plant reaches its peak of flavor about May first. Germans call the wild woodruff plant, "Waldmeister."

ELBERTA MAY WINE is appropriately sweet with a pleasant bouquet of woodruff and a hint of fresh strawberries. This unique, old European style wine is recommended for use in punches or "bowles."
