The
Christian In Complete Armour
by William Gurnall
It
may be over-allegorized at times but this is a book I keep coming
back to. As far as anyone knows Gurnall only wrote this one book
and it is a singular work. There is no better source for understanding
the Christian walk and spiritual warfare. Two versions are in print,
both from Banner of Truth. We recommend the 3-volume paperback paraphrase
version. Read an on-line version of The
Christian in Complete Armour here.

The
Treasury of David (6 volumes)
by Charles H. Spurgeon
Not
only is the best commentary on the Psalms but it is also in Spurgeon's
own words, the work dearest to his heart. Treasury is valuable for
its insightful commentary and application. It is also of interest
because Spurgeon shows his vast knowledge of the Puritans as well
some writers that are no longer in print. Everyone, scholar and
new Christian, should have this set in their library. Read
The Treasury of David at www.spurgeon.org.

Romans
(9 volumes)
by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
This
set has been published by both Zondervan and Banner of Truth. As
far as we know, volume nine is only available from Banner of Truth.
Dr. Lloyd-Jones preached this series of messages over a period of
13 years. It stands apart not only as the single best commentary
on Romans but as a framework for the genius of a man known to many
in England simply as "the Doctor".

The

Bunyan
stands apart as the Shakespeare of the Christian world. This beautiful
reprint from Banner of Truth contains everything published from
Bunyan's pen. Included are the classics, Pilgrim's Progress
and The Holy War, as well as many lesser known and previously
out-of-print works. Its expensive but well worth the money. Read
the compelte works of John Bunyan at www.johnbunyan.org.

The
Gospel According to Jesus
by John MacArthur
Some
will cringe at this addition and some will applaud. One thing is
for sure; no one was neutral on this book when it came out a few
years ago. MacArthur has done a great service to the Church by opening
up the issue of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Whether you agree
or disagree, you will be challenged by this book!

Institutes
of the Christian Religion
by John Calvin
To
say that this work has influenced the Church is about as understated
as saying that the sun is hot. Calvin's Institutes laid the foundations
for the Puritan Reformation and has cast its long shadow into our
time. This is truly one of those timeless books. It has been published
in many versions so find the one that best suits your library. Read
the Institutes of the Christian Religion on-line.

The
Pursuit of God
by A.W. Tozer
No
one could say more in less words that A.W. Tozer. This short work,
published by Christian Publications, Inc. embodies the heart of
Tozer. Here was a man who walked with God like Enoch. If you want
to be challenged in the depth of your spirit, this is the book.

Knowing
God
by J.I. Packer
I
have never forgotten the first time I read this great work of Packer.
That sums up its power. It is an unforgettable book. It is published
by InterVarsity Press. You won't read this one just once.

Faithful
Witness: The Life and Times of William Carey
by Timothy George
I
have included this book and the next one because they are examples
of what impact really good Christian biography can have. Dr. George
does more than list a string of facts about this pioneer missionary
to India. He shows us his heart, his family, and his legacy. Carey
was one-of-a-kind and this books is a one-of-a-kind biography. Read
a review of Faithful Witness here.

D.M.
Lloyd-Jones (2 volumes)
by Iain H. Murray
The two volumes
of this set are titled The First Forty Years and The
Fight of Faith (both published by Banner of Truth). Martin
Lloyd-Jones was the kind of man that would require two full volumes
to chronicle his life and ministry. Some called Spurgeon the last
puritan. They should have waited until they heard
D.Martyn Lloyd-Jones!
