Distinctives - Must Reading

Isaac Backus

.

The Life and Times of Isaac Backus by Alvah Hovey, Gano Books, 1858. (369 pages).

Isaac Backus on Church, State, and Calvinism, ed. by William G. McLoughlin, Belknap Press of Harvard University Press: Cambridge, MA, 1968. (525 pages)

  • Includes numerous sermons and pamphlets published during Backus' lifetime. Also includes a good brief biography. See especially, The Doctrine of Particular Election and Perseverance, (pp. 451-471).

A History of New England With Particular Reference to the Baptists, Arno Press: New York, 1969. (584 pages)

  • Tedious reading but worth the time. Helps one to understand the daily life of Baptists in early American life. This is important reading for those who lean toward Reconstructionism. It points out the problems with civil enforcement of spiritual matters (i.e. church attendance, etc ...).

Isaac Backus: Puritan and Baptist, by Stanley Grenz, Mercer University Press: Macon, GA, 1983. (346 pages)

  • Good biographical information on Backus
