A
Body of Doctrinal and Practical Divinity by John Gill,
The Baptist Standard Bearer, 1839, (1023 pages).
-
That's
right 1023 pages. If you think this is too much for you,
remember that Christmas
Evans managed to translate this weighty tome into
Welsh with little or no education. You cannot claim to
know what Baptists have historically believed without
reading Gill. Should be read along with Fuller's
works for an honest comparison. Read On the Nature of
a Gospel Church, an excerpt from Body of Divinity (pp.
854-859).
The
Life of John Gill by John Rippon, Gano Books, 1992.
(157 pages)
-
Since
this is the only complete biography of one of Baptist's
greatest theologians and pastors, this is must reading
for the serious student of Baptist doctrine. Tom Nettles
says of Gill, "He has doubtless been judged more harshly
and even maliciously than any many of comparable repute
in Baptist history." Read this biography and see why.
