The Downgrade by Charles Spurgeon.

  • This is a compilation of most of the writings, Spurgeon published on the subject. It may be over 100 years old but it reads like today's newspaper as far as the state of the church is concerned.

The Forgotten Spurgeon, by Iain Murray, The Banner of Truth Trust: Edinburgh, 1966. (254 pages)

  • No one is a better historian of 18th-20th century church history than Iain Murray! This book deals with Spurgeon's theology and his sad confrontation with liberalism in what he called The Downgrade. This is must reading.

Spurgeon and Hyper-Calvinism, by Iain Murray, The Banner of Truth Trust, Edinburgh, 1996, (164 pages).

  • Written 30 years after The Forgotten Spurgeon, this serves as a bookend to that work. Just as the former work focused on Spurgeon's defense of the doctrines of Grace, this work focuses on Spurgeon's denial of hyper-Calvinism.

The Treasury of David by Charles H. Spurgeon

  • Availbale in many different additions. This six volume work is the corwning achivement of the "prince of preachers." They reveals the depth of Spurgeon's knowledge of older and often forgotten writers, the beauty of the Pslams, and the holiness and majesty of God.
