A
Baptist Brief
W. A. Criswell (1909-2002)
Wally
Amos Criswell was born in Eldorado, Oklahoma
on December 19, 1909. While born in the realitvely
obscure heartland of America, Criswell's influence
would span the globe before his death at the
age of 92. Criswell was influenced as a teen
by many great speakers he listened to on the
radio. He listened to the likes of Woodrow Wilson,
William Jennings Bryan, and Will Rogers. His
greatest influences, however, were great preachers
such as Dr. L.R. Scarborough. It seemed Criswell
was meant to be a preacher of the gospel from
his earliest years. He received his B.A. degree
from Baylor and then his Th.M from Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary studying under
the likes of A.T. Robertson. After pastoring
in Oklahoma, W.A. Criswell took up the mantle
of First Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas from
George Truett. Criswell authored numerous books
and was president of the Southern Baptist Convention
twice. Criswell was best known for his expository
approach to preaching and his passion for the
person of Jesus Christ. His voice has been stilled
but not his heart or his faith.
