ECONOMY & TRANSPORTATION
| Mobile
is a southeastern transportation hub where Interstate highways 10 and 65 meet.
The Port of Mobile is a major international seaport which connects the Gulf
Coast to the Great Lakes and Pittsburgh by the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway. There are also
rail connections for passenger and
freight service. |
|
High employment levels are a good indicator of the
Alabama Gulf Coast's economic health. Underlying the
growing economy is a strong industrial base which ranks
among the top in the nation for new and expanding manufacturing concerns.
Major industries include farming ,
forest products, shipbuilding, chemicals, computer
equipment, textiles, aviation and seafood
processing. Oil and gas production is also
significant. |
| Retail trade and
tourism are flourishing. Increases in lodging and
sales tax revenue indicate a strong rate of growth. Construction starts are
rising and the total value of construction is up fifty-seven percent. There are
other signs of the area's commitment to growth, including Mobile's one hundred
million dollar downtown revitalization program. The
city has a new city-county government complex, a new waterfront
convention center and a new airport terminal. |
