HISTORY & CLIMATE

Native Americans walked this coastal landscape long before the first Europeans planted a settlement here in the early seventeen hundreds. Great Britain, France and Spain all had periods of control until the Mobile area was captured by U.S. forces in eighteen thirteen. In all, six flags have flown over the coastal community.

The area saw considerable action during the civil war. Controlled by the Confederates, Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay and the busy port city which was a center of transportation and trade. This area was the scene of such famous events as the battle of Mobile Bay and the closing battle of the war at historic Fort Blakeley.
The Gulf Coast's moderate climate makes golf, tennis and other outdoor recreation year-round activities. Freezing temperatures are rare here as warm Gulf breezes predominate. Abundant rainfall and warm weather make for a long growing season. In July the average temperature is eighty degrees Fahrenheit. January averages 50 degrees and you never have to worry about snow accumulation.
