Description

Carpinus caroliniana ‘Uxbridge’ (Rising Fire® American Hornbeam) is an upright, columnar selection of the native American hornbeam, introduced circa 2016 by J. Frank Schmidt & Sons from a standout seedling discovered at Uxbridge Nursery in Ontario. It retains the species’ fine-textured foliage and smooth, sinewy “musclewood” bark, but offers a more formal, narrow habit ideal for urban plantings. In summer the glossy green leaves transition in autumn to a vivid mix of red and orange, while dangling bracted seed clusters provide winter interest and wildlife food. This cultivar is noted for its cold hardiness (from a northern origin), good vigor, and suitability for narrow spaces. Over time, it is increasingly recognized as a valuable ornamental for city streets and smaller sites.
