Polymeric Sand vs. Resin Sand: Which Jointing Material Is Right for Your Project?

In recent years, however, resin-based jointing materials have become increasingly popular, offering contractors another option for projects where permeability, weather flexibility and specific installation methods are priorities.

Understanding the strengths and limitations of each material can help you select the right product for the job.


What Is Polymeric Sand?

Polymeric sand is a blend of graded sand and polymer additives that harden after activation with water. Once cured, it helps stabilize pavers, reduce joint erosion and discourage weed growth and insect infestation.

Polymeric sand performs well on traditional hardscape installations and remains the preferred choice for many patios, walkways, driveways and other projects constructed over a compacted aggregate base.


What Is Resin Sand?

Resin sand is a resin-based jointing material that cures through exposure to air rather than water activation. Unlike polymeric sand, many resin-based products create permeable joints that allow water to move through the surface while maintaining joint stability.

Because of these characteristics, resin sands are often selected for installations built over free-draining or hybrid base systems.


Comparing Polymeric Sand and Resin Sand

While both products stabilize paver joints, their performance differs in several key areas.


Water Management

One of the biggest differences is permeability. Many resin sands create permeable joints that allow water to infiltrate the surface and move into the drainage base below. This can help reduce surface runoff and standing water when installed over an appropriate drainage system. Polymeric sand, by comparison, forms a more water-resistant joint designed to limit water infiltration through the joint itself.


Installation Conditions

Weather can play an important role in product selection. Polymeric sand generally requires dry conditions during installation and curing to achieve optimal performance. It’s imperative to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, as steps and watering protocol can vary by product even within the same brand.

For example, Alliance Gator G2 polymeric sands are considered rain-safe after 15 minutes of installation. If weather conditions might be a concern, it’s important to understand a product’s features and limitations ahead of time.

Many resin sands can be installed in damp conditions, and some formulations are specifically designed to be installed during light rain or on wet surfaces, giving contractors greater flexibility when weather delays occur.


Base Compatibility

The type of base beneath the pavers should also influence product selection. Polymeric sand works well over traditional compacted aggregate bases.

Resin sands are often well suited for permeable or hybrid base systems because they do not require plate compaction after installation and are designed to work with free-draining assemblies.


Joint Appearance

Some resin sands allow installers to tool or shape joints after placement, creating a clean, finished appearance that may be desirable for certain natural stone or architectural applications.

Polymeric sand is swept into the joints and compacted, producing a natural yet finished look. 


Long-Term Maintenance

Once fully cured, many resin sands can withstand pressure washing without damaging the joints, making seasonal cleaning easier.

Maintenance recommendations for polymeric sand differ, and aggressive pressure washing may remove material from the joints, requiring repairs or reinstallation.


Color Selection

Which Material Is Best?

Neither product is universally better than the other, the right choice depends on the project.

Polymeric sand remains an excellent solution for traditional hardscape installations where a compacted aggregate base is used, and proven performance is the priority.

Resin sand may be a better fit for projects requiring permeability, installation flexibility during wet weather, or compatibility with hybrid and permeable base systems.

By considering factors such as drainage design, base construction, weather conditions, maintenance expectations and project goals, contractors can select the jointing material that best matches the application.
