Description

Cedrus atlantica, commonly known as Atlas cedar, is a majestic evergreen conifer native to the Atlas Mountains of northern Africa. It typically grows to a height of 40-60 feet with a spread of 30-40 feet, forming a loose pyramidal shape when young and developing a more flat-topped, spreading crown with age. The tree features short, stiff needles that range from bluish-green to silvery-blue, arranged in tufted clusters along its branches. Female cones are ovoid to cylindrical, measuring up to 3 inches long, and sit atop the branches. Atlas cedar thrives in well-drained, moist loamy soils but can tolerate sandy conditions. It prefers full sun and requires shelter from strong winds. Due to its deep taproot, transplanting can be challenging.
