Corylopsis Spicata Winter Hazel

Corylopsis Spicata Winter Hazel is a deciduous shrub that requires full sun to partial shade and acidic, light but organically rich, well-drained soils with medium moisture. Winter Hazel has ovate to obovate leaves that emerge bronze-purple and change to blue-green later in spring and attain shades of yellow to yellowish-green in fall. The leaves are glaucous and pubescent beneath. The small drooping clusters of racemes with fragrant, tiny, lemon-yellow flowers bloom in late winter to early spring before the leaves unfold. The flowers have red to purple anthers, and each raceme bears 6-12 flowers. Winter Hazel is suitable for borders, woodland plantings, and hedges. It has a dense, spreading growth habit. Inconspicuous two-beaked capsules are produced, and each cell contains two small seeds.
