Description

Monterey Cypress is a striking evergreen conifer native to a very restricted coastal area of the Monterey Peninsula in California, where strong winds and salt-spray sculpt the trees into dramatic, windswept forms. The species features aromatic scale-like foliage (with a lemony scent when crushed), rugged bark, and a narrow, pyramidal habit when young that broadens into an irregular, wide-spreading crown with age. It tolerates exposed coastal conditions, poor soils and salt spray, making it a popular ornamental and windbreak tree outside its native range. Among its cultivars, ‘Goldcrest’ has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
