Juglans Nigra Black Walnut is a huge deciduous tree with a large oval to rounded canopy of widely spreading branches. The large, oddly pinnate, compound leaves of 15-21 lanceolate leaflets exude an aroma when crushed. The leaves emerge dark green in late spring, changing to bright yellow in the fall. Black Walnut bears inconspicuous greenish-yellow blooms in spring. The male flowers appear in pendulous catkins, and female blooms emerge in terminal spikes. The female blossoms give way to sweet, edible nuts enclosed in a green husk that mature in fall. The shade tree is suitable for large landscapes or streets. It prefers full sun in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils.
