Prunus Cerasifera 'Newport' Cherry Plum emerges with dark pink buds, turning to pale pink, sweetly fragrant flowers in early spring. These give way to purple, edible berry plums highly desired by birds and wildlife. 'Newport' Cherry Plum is an ideal specimen or screen. The ornamental tree can also be grown as a large shrub and has elliptic to oval leaves that emerge light bronze-purple in spring. Leaves eventually mature to dark purple by summer, and turn reddish in fall. 'Newport' Cherry Plum requires full sun to part shade and average, medium moisture, well-drained loamy soil. It has a spreading, rounded habit.
