Description

Stewartia malacodendron, commonly known as Silky Camellia, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the southeastern United States. It features camellia-like white flowers with purple stamens and blue anthers, blooming in late spring to early summer. The plant has cinnamon-colored exfoliating bark and dark green leaves with silky hairs on the undersides. It thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic soils under partial shade and is often found in woodland settings. While not widely cultivated, it has been grown in the U.S. since 1752 and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
