Description

Syringa vulgaris ‘Ludwig Späth’ (often sold as Andenken an Ludwig Späth, Ludwig Spath or Souvenir de Louis Späth) is a classic common lilac prized for very dark, intensely fragrant, wine-purple flower panicles produced in mid-spring. It is an upright, spreading, deciduous shrub (sometimes trained as a small tree) with dark green, heart-shaped leaves and relatively long, slender panicles of single flowers that create strong spring fragrance and visual impact; the cultivar was introduced in the 19th century by the Späth nursery in Germany and remains a garden favorite for traditional and cottage plantings. This selection has been widely recognized by European horticultural authorities.
