Description

A striking late-spring-flowering hybrid magnolia, Magnolia x ‘Jon Jon’ features very large fragrant goblet-to-saucer shaped blooms (often up to 10–12 inches/25–30 cm across) that open creamy white with a subtle rose-or purple-flush at the base of the tepals. Bred by noted magnolia hybridiser Todd Gresham (later selected by John Allen Smith) and believed to be a cross involving M. × soulangeana × M. × veitchii, its later bloom time helps it avoid many damaging late-winter or early-spring frost events. It also displays attractive paddle-shaped foliage and a somewhat compact small-tree habit (typically 20–30 ft tall). While not widely touted for formal awards, it is highly regarded among magnolia enthusiasts for its size, fragrance and frost-escape bloom window.
