Description

Carex frankii, commonly known as Frank’s Sedge or Bristly Cattail Sedge, is a cool-season native sedge that brings texture, movement, and serious ecological value to wet gardens and restoration sites. Forming dense, arching clumps of bright green, grass-like foliage, it thrives along streams, pond margins, rain gardens, and wet meadows across eastern and central North America. In late spring to summer, it produces distinctive, bristly, thimble-shaped green seed heads that later turn brown, feeding ducks, songbirds, and other wildlife while adding bold, textural interest. Exceptionally tolerant of wet and even periodically flooded soils, this low-maintenance, deer-resistant perennial anchors soil against erosion and is frequently recommended by native plant and conservation groups as a sturdy workhorse for rain gardens, bioswales, and wetland plantings.
