Description

Selaginella kraussiana ‘Variegata’, widely sold as “Frosty Fern” or “Frosty Moss Fern,” is a tiny, ancient spikemoss that looks like a miniature fern dusted with fresh snow. Its dense, mat-forming foliage is deep green with creamy white tips, creating a frosted effect that makes it a favorite for holiday décor, terrariums, and shade containers. Native to Africa and Macaronesia, the species has been grown in Europe since the late 1800s and represents one of the oldest vascular plant lineages, reproducing by spores rather than flowers or seed. The Royal Horticultural Society has recognized Selaginella kraussiana and several of its cultivars, including ‘Variegata’, with the Award of Garden Merit for dependable performance under garden and protected conditions, underscoring its value as a small-scale groundcover and as a superb terrarium and interiorscape plant.
