Description

Cleistocactus winteri ‘Cristata’, commonly known as the Crested Golden Rat Tail, is a visually striking, crested form of the golden rat tail cactus native to Bolivia (Santa Cruz region) . It features densely clustered, long, cylindrical stems, up to ~90 cm long and 2–2.5 cm in diameter, covered in flexible golden bristles that give it a soft, tactile appearance. During spring to summer it produces abundant salmon-pink to orange funnel flowers (~4–6 cm) with prominent stamens, followed by small barrel-shaped fruit. The Cristata form exhibits unique, undulating crest patterns that create an almost sculptural habit. This cultivar is easy to grow in well-drained soil with moderate summer watering and remains mostly dormant and dry in cooler seasons.
