Description

Jatropha berlandieri, often called Buddha Belly or Baseball plant, is a caudiciform succulent shrub native to Texas and Mexico. It develops a swollen, bottle‑shaped trunk (caudex) that stores water, topped by lobed evergreen leaves and clusters of bright red–crimson flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Reaching up to about 2 ft tall in garden settings (larger in native habitats), it thrives in full sun, sandy well‑drained soils, and low water conditions. All parts contain irritating sap and toxins, so handling with care is advised. It is evergreen, drought‑tolerant, salt‑tolerant, and low‑maintenance—often used as an ornamental accent or container plant.
