Clethra Alnifolia Summersweet is a rounded, suckering, deciduous shrub that grows typically to 3-6 feet tall and has dense branches. It is well known for its narrow, upright panicles of sweetly aromatic, white flowers that appear from mid to late summer. The blossoms give way to dark brown seed capsules that might persist throughout winter. In the fall, Summersweet's lustrous, serrated, obovate to oblong, dark green leaves turn to various appealing shades of yellow to a golden brown. It prefers average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. The shrub is ideal for hedges, shrub borders, or foundation plantings.
