Krugiodendron Ferreum Black Ironwood

Krugiodendron Ferreum Black Ironwood is an evergreen tree that prefers full sun to partial sun and thrives in moist, well-drained, sandy, or limestone soil with a top layer of humus. Black Ironwood exhibits oppositely arranged emarginate, oval, leathery leaves, 2.5 inches long and slightly notched at the tip, remaining on the branch throughout the year. It has small greenish star-shaped flowers that bloom on and off throughout the year but are fullest from spring to summer, emitting an almond-like fragrance. The tree grows up to 15-25 feet with a rounded to narrow, pyramidal shape and bears a drupe-type of edible fruit 1/3 inch long that turns purplish red as it matures. Ideal for use as a small specimen tree in residential landscapes, as a street tree, or as a large shrub in the background or under full sun around perimeters.
