Description

Phellodendron amurense 'His Majesty', commonly known as His Majesty Amur Corktree, is a distinctive, large deciduous shade tree selected for its bold, architectural presence and improved ornamental traits over the species. Native to northeastern Asia, including China, Korea, and eastern Russia, Phellodendron amurense has a long history of use in traditional landscapes and medicine, with its thick, corky bark giving rise to the common name “corktree.” The cultivar ‘His Majesty’ is noted for its strong central leader, broad, symmetrical crown, and handsome pinnately compound foliage that emerges bright green, deepens through summer, and turns a clear golden yellow in fall. Mature trees develop deeply furrowed, spongy gray-brown bark that adds striking winter interest. Adaptable to urban conditions, tolerant of heat, drought, and pollution once established, and less prone to invasiveness concerns than seed-producing types, ‘His Majesty’ is valued as a durable specimen or park tree where ample space allows its stately form to fully develop.
