Description

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta Variegata’ (commonly called the variegated Hindu Rope) is a striking sport of the classic rope hoya, prized for its tightly folded, corkscrew-like foliage edged or streaked with creamy white or pink variegation that cascades in rope-like vines. Its twisted, fleshy leaves are semi-succulent and have a waxy sheen, and from mature plants emerge clusters of fragrant, porcelain star-shaped blossoms on perennial peduncles. The variegated form was likely derived as a mutation of the established ‘Compacta’ (also known by the trade name “Hindu Rope”) lineage, which itself originated from a branch mutation at Hummel’s Exotic Gardens in the mid-20th century. Over time, the variegated forms have become popular collector’s plants, appreciated for their unusual foliage and delicate flowers.
