Description

Rhododendron x ‘Midnight Ruby’ is a compact, evergreen broad-leaf shrub introduced by Weston Nurseries and hybridized by E. V. Mezitt in 1973. This cultivar is distinguished by its rich reddish-purple flowers, each truss bearing 10-15 blossoms with frilly, wavy edges and a contrasting yellowish-brown eye. The foliage is especially notable: coppery‐green when new, but deepening to a nearly blackish-brown hue in fall and winter, lending year-round interest. With a mature size of about 2–3 feet tall and wide, it is well-suited for smaller landscapes, mixed borders, or woodland gardens. It is described as a “compact powerhouse” for the landscape.
