Description

Citrus ujukitsu, commonly known as Ujukitsu or “lemonade fruit,” is a Japanese citrus hybrid developed in the 1950s by Dr. Tanaka, likely a tangelo cross. It was introduced to the U.S. via USDA’s Rio Farms and nearly lost during the 1983 freeze—budwood from one survivor was propagated by John Panzarella. The small tree exhibits a distinctive weeping form with long, arching branches, producing large pear-shaped, bright yellow fruits as big as softballs. The thick-skinned fruit is mildly sweet, juicy, and reminiscent of lemonade; blooms are fragrant in spring, with fruit ripening through fall into early winter. It’s praised for cold tolerance down to mid‑20s °F and early fruiting compared to similar sweet lemons.
