Calophyllum Brasiliense Santa Maria is an evergreen tree that exhibits oval to oblong 2-4 inch long leaves with a glossy dark green top and pale green underside. Santa Maria prefers full to partial sun and thrives in moist, free-draining, clay and loam, slightly acidic to acidic soils. The fragrant white flowers with yellow centers of numerous stamens bloom on the tree, and it bears round fruit known as ballnut. Santa Maria has a growth habit of up to 130 feet tall. This tree is ideal for use as veneer in plywood for boat construction, flooring, cabinetwork, furniture, and dilo, a medicinal oil extracted from the seeds.
