Carya Tomentosa Mockernut Hickory is known for its edible, rounded nuts with thick, four-grooved husks that split open in fall when matured. Mockernut Hickory blooms with monoecious, yellowish-green flowers from April to May. Its male flowers appear in drooping catkins and the female flowers on short spikes. The deciduous tree has aromatic, compound, dark yellowish-green leaves with toothed and ovate-lanceolate leaflets. The leaflets have pubescent rachis and petiole. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. Mockernut Hickory thrives in humusy, rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade.
