Description

Dracaena fragrans (corn plant) is a tropical African evergreen often grown as a hardy, low-maintenance houseplant or landscape accent in frost-free climates. In its native habitat it may mature into a branch-forming tree reaching heights of 15 m or more, but indoors it is more commonly seen at 4–6 ft tall with a single cane or few branches and a rosette of glossy, arching, straplike leaves (to ~2 ft long). These leaves are typically rich green, but many cultivars exhibit striking variegation. Under optimal tropical conditions it occasionally produces intensely fragrant, creamy white to pinkish flowers in terminal panicles, followed by orange red berries. Some cultivars of D. fragrans such as ‘Massangeana’, ‘Lemon Lime’, and ‘Warneckii’ have earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
