Description

Euphorbia lathyris, commonly known as caper spurge, mole plant, or paper spurge, is a biennial herbaceous plant native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is characterized by its erect, glaucous blue-green stems and lanceolate leaves arranged in opposite pairs. The plant produces small, green to yellow-green flowers lacking petals, and its seeds are contained in globular capsules that can explosively disperse when ripe. Notably, all parts of the plant exude a milky latex sap that is toxic and can cause skin irritation upon contact. Historically, caper spurge has been used in folk medicine and as a purported mole deterrent, although its effectiveness in pest control is unproven. Due to its self-seeding nature and adaptability to various environments, it has become naturalized in many regions outside its native range.
