Description

Ficus lyrata (Fiddle‑Leaf Fig) is a striking broadleaf evergreen tree native to tropical western and central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Cameroon, thriving in moist lowland forests . In its native habitat it can soar 60–100 ft tall; as a beloved houseplant, it typically reaches 2–10 ft under care. Its name derives from Latin: Ficus (fig) and lyrata (lyre-shaped), referencing its large, leathery, fiddle‑shaped leaves up to 18″ long and 12″ wide. In nature, F. lyrata start as epiphytes, germinating atop other trees and sending roots downward, sometimes enveloping hosts. It produces globular figs in habitat, though rarely fruits indoors. Garnering acclaim beyond horticulture, it holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
