Description

Gardenia jasminoides Cape Jasmine is a broadleaf evergreen shrub treasured for its intensely fragrant, creamy-white, rose-like flowers set against thick, glossy dark green foliage. Native to the warm, humid forests and streambanks of China and Japan, it has been cultivated there for at least a thousand years and later became a prized conservatory plant in 18th-century Europe before spreading through Southern gardens in the United States. The shrub’s perfume is so strong that just a few blooms can scent an entire patio, and its orange berry-type fruits are used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a natural yellow food and fabric dye. In modern horticulture, Gardenia jasminoides (as a species) has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for outstanding garden performance, particularly in milder climates where it can flower over a long season.
