Description

Tifblue is a vigorous, upright rabbiteye blueberry introduced in 1955 by the University of Georgia and USDA-ARS at Tifton, from a cross of ‘Ethel’ × ‘Clara’. It forms a tall, multi-stemmed shrub with glossy blue-green summer foliage that turns brilliant orange-red to burgundy in fall, making it as ornamental as it is productive. In mid to late March it carries masses of white, bell-shaped flowers, followed by heavy crops of small to medium, light blue berries from late June through July, with sweet-tart flavor that’s best when fully ripe. Plants are noted for cold hardiness within the rabbiteye group, strong heat and drought tolerance, and good disease resistance, and are widely recommended by southern extension services for home and pick-your-own plantings. Decades after its release, Tifblue is still described as one of the best, most widely adapted, and “most universally outstanding” rabbiteye blueberries on the market, a kind of informal industry recognition reflected in its continued widespread use in the southern United States.
