Description

Baptisia × Decadence® 'Dutch Chocolate' is a compact, upright herbaceous perennial celebrated for its velvety, chocolate-purple pea-like flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Bred in 2003 by Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens, this hybrid combines Baptisia minor and Baptisia sphaerocarpa to achieve a dense, mounded habit and rich floral coloration. It belongs to the Decadence® series, known for shorter stature and vibrant blooms. The plant forms attractive charcoal-black seed pods in fall, adding winter interest. Its deep taproot makes it long-lived and drought-tolerant once established. 'Dutch Chocolate' is a favorite in cottage gardens, prairies, and native plant landscapes, and has been recognized for its ornamental value and adaptability.
