Description

Athyrium niponicum var. pictum ‘Ursula’s Red’, commonly known as Ursula’s Red Japanese painted fern, is a clump‑forming, deciduous fern celebrated for its striking foliage. Emerging in spring as deep wine‑red centered fronds that fade to silvery‑green with prominent maroon midribs, this variety maintains a compact, arching habit roughly 12–24″ in height and width. Naturally spreading via short rhizomes, it thrives in part to full shade in moist, humus‑rich, well‑drained soils. Bred by Ursula Hertz in South Carolina, it was trialed at the Chicago Botanic Garden from 2002–2014, earning top ratings for performance and cold hardiness (USDA Zones 4–9) . It has not only captured the horticultural world’s attention for its ornamental appeal but is also recognized by major botanical institutions.
