Cercis canadensis Garden Gems® 'NC2017-6' Amethyst Eastern Redbud is a compact, ornamental tree distinguished by its deep purple, heart-shaped foliage and vibrant pink blooms. Developed in 2017 by Dr. Dennis Werner at the JC Raulston Arboretum, this cultivar is a hybrid between 'Ace of Hearts' and 'Ruby Falls', combining a dense, compact form with rich, purple leaves. It reaches a mature size of 8 to 10 feet in both height and width, making it ideal for small gardens, patios, or containers. In early spring, before leaf emergence, the tree is adorned with clusters of pinkish-purple, pea-like flowers that attract pollinators. The foliage maintains its amethyst hue throughout the summer, providing continuous visual interest. Recognized for its ornamental value and adaptability, it has received the Garden Center Group Retailers’ Choice Award. This low-maintenance, drought-tolerant tree thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 9.
