Strophanthus gratus, commonly known as Climbing Oleander, is a semi-deciduous, woody liana native to West and Central tropical Africa, where it thrives in moist forest margins and riverbanks. It can grow as a scrambling vine up to 80 ft. long or as a bushy shrub of 6-10 ft., featuring opposite glossy leaves and fragrant, 5-lobed flowers in shades of white‑pink with burgundy or pink corona lobes. Cultivated both locally and in tropical gardens worldwide, it’s valued for its ornamental appeal and rose-like scent, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Historically, its seeds have been a source of ouabain, a cardiac glycoside once used medicinally and agriculturally as arrow poison. Ornamental use includes greenhouses in cooler climates.
