Castanea Mollissima Chinese Chestnut is a medium-sized deciduous shade tree with a short trunk and an open rounded crown adorned with wide-spreading branches. Chinese Chestnut's shiny, dark green, coarsely serrated leaves turn yellow to golden brown in the fall. The shade tree thrives in moist, well-drained soil under full sun. Chinese Chestnut is suitable for specimen plantings in lawns, prairies, and meadows. Showy, creamy-white flowers appear in catkins in late spring to early summer. They give way to clusters of 2-3 edible chestnuts encased in spiny dehiscent burs.
