Larix Occidentalis Western Larch

Larix occidentalis, commonly known as Western Larch, is a deciduous conifer native to the mountainous regions of the Pacific Northwest, including parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Notably, it is one of the few conifers that shed their needles annually, displaying a striking golden-yellow color in autumn before leaf drop. This species thrives in well-drained soils on moist, north or east-facing mountain slopes but is also adaptable to drier, rocky sites. Western Larch is shade-intolerant and exhibits rapid growth in its youth, eventually reaching impressive sizes, with some individuals living over 700 years. Its thick, fire-resistant bark and high canopy make it well-adapted to fire-prone environments. The wood is highly valued for its density and durability, commonly used in construction and for producing larch gum, which serves as an emulsifier in foods and medicines.
