Description

Acer palmatum ‘Rhode Island Red’ is a semi-dwarf red-leaf Japanese maple selected by Rhode Island Nurseries in Middletown, RI, prized for its compact, densely branched, rounded to ovate form and excellent seasonal color transitions. The foliage emerges a vivid bright red in spring, deepens to a burgundy or purplish-red through summer, and culminates in a fiery orange-red in autumn, while the dark red stems provide winter interest. This cultivar maintains its rich color better under sun and heat stress than many red-leaf maples, and is often likened to a smaller version of ‘Bloodgood’ in habit. It is suited for small gardens, accent planting, or containers, and is hardy in USDA zones 5–9.
