A sump pump is a low-volume pump that removes rainwater runoff from basements and yards to prevent flooding. Finally, there are effluent pumps, which are a cross between the two for small solids (i.e. graywater) and mid-volume applications.

You also have a choice between manual and float switch water pumps. Manual pumps, which must be turned on and off by hand, are the lower-cost option. Float-switch septic pumps auto-switch when water reaches a certain level, making them more efficient and less labor-intensive.
