What is Hydroseeding?

Hydromulching and hydroseeding are used interchangeably by most agronomy professionals. For this specialized process, landscapers spray a “slurry” mixture of grass seed, mulch, fertilizers, water and other components. You also can simply apply mulch and tackifier to give bare ground a protective cover.

Hydroseeding is mainly used on construction sites and other places where you need seeds to germinate faster. It helps with erosion control, reduces weed growth, produces more uniform lawns and is cost-effective. The technique is also the clear choice for steep slopes and roadsides where conventional seed application isn’t practical.

Types of Hydromulch

Just like with regular mulching, you will need the right hydro mulch to produce the best results. Here are the most common hydro seeding materials:
  • Cellulose Hydromulch, or paper mulch, is an inexpensive biodegradable mulch for ground cover and slopes of 4:1 or lower.
  • Wood Hydraulic Mulch is made of wood chips that provide greater erosion control and moisture retention on steep slopes of 2:1 or lower.
  • Blended Hydromulch contains a mix of cellulose and wood for moderate slopes of 3:1 or lower.
  • Combination Hydromulch also includes seed and/or fertilizer for lawn starting.
